Berlinale 2019 / Our Line-Up
Our line-up for this year’s Berlinale resonates with one of the festival’s important themes: women’s place in the world across a wide range of societies, from Costa Rica (El despertar de las HORMIGAS) to Mauritania (Flesh Out), from South Africa (Panorama-opener Flatland) to Italy (Normal) and Greece (The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea). In fiction as well as documentary formats, these films - four of them by woman directors, and with exceptionally impressive female casts - deal with violence in gender relations, imposed body images, the clash between tradition and self-realization and economic independence.
Family and economic inequality is also one of the themes of Denis Coté’s visually striking and formally daring Competition entry Ghost Town Anthology. In a very different manner, Marcelo Gomes documents the impact of neoliberal economics in a provincial Brazilian town in Waiting for the Carnival.
